If you like kids, and you like having fun, you'll probably be a great fit! It helps if you enjoy thinking outside the box, love zany silly ideas, and have a tolerance for chaos. Then you'll definitely be a good fit! It can also help to have a little bit of organization and perhaps another adult/parent to assist. Think of it as being a scout leader only the kids have much more say in the direction you're going, and you only meet from November until March. Unless you go to State's or World's ... but we can cross that bridge when we come to it .... ;)
What does a coach do and how do I do a good job?
The number one rule for coaching Odyssey of the Mind is that if the kids are having fun and want to keep coming back then you are doing it right! Your primary resources are the official Program Guide containing all of the rules, and your team's chosen Problem with all the instructions you could possibly need. Each coach gets a hard copy. Attendance at monthly coaches meetings will make sure you start off and stay on the right track. Beyond that, here are some fantastic resources:
Sara Snarr, Spencerport's OotM District Coordinator, is your resource when things go wrong.
In addition, coaches meetings for all Spenceport coaches are held monthly during the OotM season on the dates below. This is a great opportunity to pick up strategies and tips, and to learn from more experienced coaches.
What if I'm too busy to coach but still want to help out?
Our region always needs more judges and officials! This is a great way to see the kids in action and support Odyssey of the Mind without making a big time commitment. You'll attend a brief training session where you will learn everything you need to help the kids have a great experience at the regional tournament. Anyone who is 18 years old and a high school graduate can be a judge. Contact Sara Snarr to sign up. To sign up, visit the Greater Rochester Regional Odyssey of the Mind.
